Graphic designer needs help with self promo.?
I am a current grad, and seeking for jobs. I want to do some self promo with my resume.The idea is……. sending big time publishers and adver. agencies a personalized copy of my resume & cover letter. I would send them by mail a box in side the box a hand made clutch(purse) which will be wraped in gift wrapping paper, like an expesive purse. Inside the purse will be the documents but they will be printed in fabric, my business
card will be a fabric swatch. The question is will it work , is it tacky? I have good taste, I know everything will be based on materials and bottom line ….craft.
As an art director, I appreciate when people take the time to make their self promotion stand out from the pack, as it is a very competitive industry. However, unless you’re targeting people in the fashion and/or package design industry, this might be a whole lot of work, time, money, etc. that won’t give you the return you’re hoping for. If you want to make a stand-out self promotion piece, maybe focus on just the business card on fabric (which sounds very interesting).
Gorgeous self-promotion aside, it’s your work that will get you in the door. All the time, effort and expense that you want to put into this project would be much better served putting it into your portfolio. If your purse project rocks, but your porfolio is weak, they’ll just chalk you up to a good crafter, and not a designer.
